As a lightweight f2.8 more affordable 70-200 zoom for general use without VR and limited close up ability it seems to me a first class lens. Matt Grainger estimated IBIS is 2-3 stops lower than the 5 stops specification of the Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Based on this single estimate IBIS is worth about 2.5 stops.

I wouldn't put any TC onto the excellent 200-400mm/f4 AF-S VR; it would quickly turn some very expensive optics to a poor performer. Any 1.4x is kind of iffy for the 70-200mm/f2.8; it works better on the version 2 because it is a sharper lens to begin with.. The bottomline is that any TC is going to degrade your optics.

1. Matt Irwin has a pretty nice comparo of the 70-180 vs the Z70-200 and the 70-200 E FL and 70-200 G VR. If I didn't already own the F-mount E FL, I'd certainly buy the 70-180. In one of the nighttime video scenes with oncoming vehicle lights, the 70-180 showed zero ghosting and on the Z 70-200 it was very prominent.
