I prefer the hardtop; the only functional downside vs the soft top is ease of removal / installation and forethought. I leave the soft top installed on my car and drive with the hard top most of the time, if it's really hot or I just want to drive with the top down I'll take the hard top off before I leave and put the soft top up if it rains. The hardtop to me looks a little better but the st to me is the way to go. You get that open feeling which the miata is all about. Cheap fun that you get in a throw the top down in a second. I agree, but some people want to see the world burn and slash your soft top even though nothing is visible in the car.
