Every review says it, and I can confirm, the Mafate Speed 4 reminds me of my Mach 5s. The Speedgoat 5’s are basically the Speedgoat EVOs - which was a great shoe. If you like Hokas - both are great trail shoes. In retrospect, I would’ve switched how I used the shoes - the Speedgoats at the Rut and the Mafates for R3. For me, the Speedgoat
Hoka Speedgoat 4 (RTR Review) If you want light and for sure runnable with best in Hoka technical terrain capabilities go Speedgoat (regular of mid height) but you won’t get to the level of soft cush and easy comfort of the Anacapa. But sure enough the 4 holds itself very well as a winter trail alternative. Usually I would have swapped to my innov8 x-talon 230

The Hoka Mafate Speed 4 has one of those layers, but this time, Hoka seems to have it right. Before this year, you’d be forgiven for mixing up the Speedgoat and the Mafate. They were both max-stack, trail-ready beasts. Now, there’s a well-defined divide. Hoka One One Speedgoat 4. The Speedgoat 4 offers much more generous cushioning with a 32 mm thick sole under the heel (compared to 23 mm for the Torrent 2). This is noticeable in weight, with 50g (1.76oz) more on the SG4, which is not insignificant. The level of protection is equivalent, but the grip of the Torrent 2 is a bit better.
Our Verdict If you delight in cushioned comfort, the Hoka Speedgoat 4 is one to consider. Don't let the "boaty" look of this shoe fool you. It's built for comfort that'll perform on the longest of runs. The underfoot cushioning is characteristically responsive, blasting you forward with each step.

I am also an 11.5 in other Hoka shoes (including Clifton 2, Clifton 4, Speedgoat 2, and Cavu) and in models from Altra, Merrell, Salewa, and Salomon. In La Sportiva, I’m 45.5.
